Michael Peter Christin of Toano, VA, died Sunday June 23, 2013, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond as a result of injuries from a bicycle accident. He will be greatly missed. Mr. Christin was born on February 22, 1949, in Columbus, OH, to the late Robert Ernest and Dorothy (Dunn) Christin. Mr. Christin received a BA degree in Philosophy from St. Norbert's College, DePere, WI, and an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, Glendale, AZ. Mr. Christin served in the United States Navy, Special Warfare Unit, SEAL Team Two in Norfolk, VA. He was the medical corpsman for his unit. In Europe, he participated in numerous cross training missions with NATO special warfare units. Mr. Christin was Executive Director of the Healing Place, a recovery program and detox facility for homeless men in Athens, GA, and was the founding Executive Director of The Healing Place, in Richmond, VA. Mr. Christin developed community support, obtained approval from city officials, and launched a capital campaign to establish the facility that still serves the Richmond community. Mr. Christin was active as a volunteer for Williamsburg Walk the Talk, a mentoring program for people released from jail in the Williamsburg community. He was an avid skydiver with well over 3000 jumps, after which he stopped counting. Earlier in his career, Mr. Christin served as an international trade manager for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for an international corporation that operated restaurants throughout Latin America, and Vice President for commercial loans at Bank of America (Sovran) in Norfolk. Mr. Christin is survived by his loving wife Teresa Faircloth Christin of Toano, VA; son Michael Peter Christin, Jr.; his brothers Robert (Barbara) of Washington Grove, MD; George (Audrey Schwartz) of Medford, MA; Matthew of Portola Valley, CA; Joseph of Waltham, MA; Edward of Miami Beach, FL; John (Linda) of Milford, CT; by his sisters Rita Bertino (Joseph) of Ossining, NY; Mary Christin (John Becker) of Waltham, MA; and by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Christin is predeceased by his brother Paul. A funeral mass for Mr. Christin will be held at the Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, VA, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 6, 2013. Friends are invited to visit Mr. Christin’s family at the Church after the service. His remains will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Christin's name may be made to the Hickory Neck Episcopal Church.
