Obituary of Marshall Eugene Smith
Marshall Eugene "Smitty" Smith, age 81, of Bloomington passed away Tuesday evening, January 19, 2021 at his residence. Born February 16, 1939 in Bloomington, he was the son of Howard L. and Ina Mae (Stansifer) Smith. Marshall graduated from Bloomington High School and started his working career at Stansifer Radio in Bloomington. He then went on to hold several positions at Otis Elevator and retired after 40 years of service. In addition to working at Otis Elevator, Marshall owned and operated Smitty's Pool Supplies where he appreciated his many customers, and they appreciated him for his personal service. Smitty was a member of the NRA and was an ardent supporter of police. He donated regularly to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas and to many local charities caring for the less fortunate members of our community that needed food and shelter. He was of the Christian faith. Smitty is survived by his loving wife, Kay (Love) Smith, to whom he married on January 12, 1957 in McDoel Baptist Church, his daughter, Korki (Mike) Tharp, of Bloomington, one sister, Barbara Smith Houseworth, of Martinsville, brother and sister-in-law, Reva and Russell Shields, of Solsberry; two brothers-in-law, Dickie Gilliland, of Bloomington and Buster Oakes, of Eminence; four grandchildren, Rachael (Austin) Tharp Vickrey, Ryan (Rebecca Saulter) Tharp, David Smith and Daniel Smith; and five great grandchildren; Arissa North, Aiden Tharp, Chase Tharp, Arlo Vickrey and Penny Vickrey. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Marty Gene Smith, and Mickey David Smith, one sister, Norma Smith Oakes, two brothers-in-law, Robert Houseworth and Jerry Love, one sister-in-law, Peggy (Love) Gilliland and one brother and sister-in-law, Bonnie (Love) Bell and Eddie Bell. Due to CoVid restrictions, a private family visitation and funeral service will be on Monday at the Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene and Harrell Chapel; 700 W. Gourley Pike.
