Obituary of Mrs. Mildred Joan Hughes
Mildred Joan (Simmons) Hughes unexpectedly passed away at home on February 17 in Bloomington, IN. Joan was born in Terre Haute, Indiana to Frank Robert Simmons of Sullivan, Indiana, and Mildred Marguerite (Ricks) Simmons of Washington, Indiana. She and Lawson Hill Hughes , Jr. met while attending Indiana University and were married on September 26, 1949 in New York, NY. Survivors include two sons, William Alan Hughes and Dale Lawson Hughes, both of Bloomington; one daughter, Sharon Kay Hughes, of Ellettsville; two granddaughters, April Joan (Thomas) Newton (Tony) of Spencer, and Amber Jenel (Thomas) Hendrickson (Joshua Aaron) of Ellettsville; two great grandsons, Colton Lawson and Caleb Lee Newton, of Spencer, and one great granddaughter, Ella Grace Hendrickson, of Ellettsville. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Lawson. Joan was an avid nature lover and spent many happy hours gardening and tending to the family’s land. In addition, she loved reading, listening to a wide variety music, and spending time with her family. She was also very proud of the time she spent serving her country with the Navy WAVES during World War II. Joan was a strong, caring, amazing woman who will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her family suggests that contributions made in her memory go to either WTIU Public Television or the Sycamore Land Trust of Indiana. Arrangements are under the direction of Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel.
