Donald Ray Barker

Donald Ray Barker, 102, was born in Johnstown, PA on June 1, 1918 and went home to be with the Lord on March 23, 2021. He graduated from Southmont HS in 1938. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian Barker; wife, Emma “Mickey” Barker of 62 years and brothers, William and Ned Barker. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Becky Miller of VA Beach; son, Neil Barker (Luanne) of Charlotte, NC; grandsons, Clayton Barker of Nashville, TN and Brian Barker (Meghan) of Charlotte, NC; brother, Clair Barker (Florence) of Johnstown, PA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of Norview United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing for many years with his friends at Eagle Haven golf course and had six hole-in-ones. His pride and joy was his two grandsons who also joined him on the golf course. He served 30 years in the US Navy (1941 to 1971) rose through the ranks from Seaman Recruit to Lieutenant Commander serving on numerous ships including three destroyers: USS Buchanan DD484, USS Shea DM30, and USS Meredith DD890, two aircraft carriers: USS Randolph CVA-15, USS Independence CVA-62 and several other ships. He received numerous medals including the Purple Heart for injuries received as a result of enemy action in the South Pacific Area/Guadalcanal on August 8, 1942. He lived a good Life and always encouraged others to “work hard, save your money and treat people the way you want to be treated”. The family would like to express a special thank you to Catie Abbott, Steve Winter and the entire staff of Bay Lake Assisted Living Community for their loving care and compassion for 13 years. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veteran Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
