On 29 March 2021, Donald A. Stoufer, CAPTAIN, USN (RET), age 84. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Richard K. And Elizabeth Clark Stoufer, Don was educated at Brown University and the University of Iowa. He received post-graduate degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and the Naval War College. He served in the Navy for 30 years, commanding three ships, and earning numerous personal and unit decorations. His last assignment was as Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Navy. After retiring from the Navy in 1987, Don held various positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and IBM. After retiring from IBM, he worked for the National Academy for Public Administration. His proudest achievement in his post-Navy life was founding the Mid-Atlantic chapter of the Starlight Foundation for Children, and he loved the opportunity to play Santa Claus at Children’s Hospital during his many years supporting the Foundation. He was a docent and then information desk volunteer at the Library of Congress, and active in the Volunteer Council for the National Symphony Orchestra. Don loved music, theater, and travel, and was fortunate to have visited every continent, including Antarctica. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary K., and sons Robert (Leanne) of Keswick, VA, and Steven (Maria) of Montpelier, VT., grandchildren Honor (Wess) Geyer, Sloane Stoufer, Hazen and Stella Stoufer, and three great-grandchildren, Bear, Leo, and Indigo Geyer. He’s also survived by his brother, Richard (Sigrid), and sister, Jane. Services to be held at a later date with interment in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Symphony Orchestra, or Children’s Hospital.
