Obituary of Shirley Anne Hawkins Syouf
Shirley Anne Hawkins Syouf, born in Culpeper, Virginia on August 12, 1925, passed away peacefully in Culpeper Hospital on Monday, April 5th at 10:00 P.M., where she was being treated for aspiration pneumonia. She moved to Culpeper in August, 2019, from Colonial Heights, Virginia after the death of her husband Al Syouf, and after being away for 70 years. She resided at the Arbors of Culpeper until March 2020 when she suffered from a fall moved to The Culpeper. At the age of 25 she married Col Robert Rowland Shaefer, a career Air Force officer, and former test pilot, member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Nato Committee at SHAPE Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe. They lived in Ohio, Sweden, California, France, and Washington, D.C. Together they are survived by three children: Stephanie (Stevie) Lynn Shaefer of Alexandria and Front Royal, Virginia; Michael Kent Shaefer, of Buies Creek, North Carolina; Jeffry Rowland Shaefer of Hingham and Fair Haven, Massachusetts, and their daughter-in-law, Peggy Lowney Shaefer also of Hingham and Fair Haven, Massachusetts. Then for 25 years she was married to Joseph Tucker of Warrenton, Virginia, where they both were very successful in the field of Real Estate. For the next 25 years she was married to Al Syouf and moved to Colonial Heights where he was stationed at Ft. Lee, until he died in April, 2018. Shirley Anne was quite a lady and worked out at a gym until age 93, was an avid golfer, and shopper of antique furniture. She was a loved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. In addition to her three children and daughter-in-law listed above, she is survived by her sister, Mary Cecelia (Celey) Haught of Rixeyville, Virginia; her brothers, Tomas Kent Hawkins of Las Vegas, Nevada and Pete Hawkins of West Palm Beach, Florida; her Cousins Linda Boo Yancey Ingram and Letitia Yancey Turner of Brandy Station, Virginia, and her two grandchildren, Bridgit Margaret Shaefer, of Brooklyn, New York and Samuel Patrick Shaefer of Denver, Colorado. There will be a Memorial Service to honor Shirley Monday, May 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow services in the Culpeper National Cemetery, New Grounds at 2:00 p.m. Please follow COVID-19 guidelines by wearing a facemask.
