Obituary of Raymond John Mataloni Jr.
On April 26, 2021, Raymond Mataloni, Jr. of Chantilly, VA, loving father of two, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 57. Raymond was born on June 4, 1963 in Fairfax, VA to Raymond (Sr.) and Rosemary (Weirbowski) Mataloni. Raymond and his former wife Lisa (Sherwood) Mataloni raised two sons, Alex and Ben. He was a devoted father with a diverse set of interests that included kayaking, cooking, softball, playing guitar, photography, archery, fishing, and camping. He loved the Cleveland Indians, riffing on bad movies, and teaching Sunday school at Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, VA. He also taught economics as an adjunct professor at his alma mater, the University of Mary Washington. Raymond will be remembered for his quiet, humble presence, his intellectual and spiritual curiosity, and his playful sense of humor. A lifelong resident of Northern Virginia, Raymond graduated from Chantilly High School where he played football, wrestled, and was an active member of the French Club. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mary Washington in 1985, double majoring in Business and French. In 1986, Raymond joined the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). He earned a master’s degree in Economics from George Mason University in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Economics from American University in 2007. At BEA, he served most of his career in the International Directorate, where he had been the chief of the Research and Methodology Group since 2014. His colleagues will remember him for his collaborative leadership style, innovative research, and extensive knowledge of economic globalization. Raymond was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary. He is survived by his sons Alex and Ben, his former spouse Lisa, his younger sister Kelly, his father Ray Sr., and numerous cousins, notably Michele, Karen, and Jerry. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax. Following the service, a reception will be held at Demaine Fairfax Funeral Home.
