Obituary of Jean Brice Clayton

Jean Brice Clayton, a resident of Williamsburg, VA, and formerly of Newport News, VA and Naples, FL, died on Sunday, May 30, 2021, at the age of 88 after a brief illness. She was born in Holdenville, OK, on November 4, 1932 to the late Albert Edward Brice and Edna Melinda Oldham. She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Edward Brice. Immediate survivors include her three daughters, Kay Clayton Cooper of Ellicott City, MD, Gina Rena Clayton of Williamsburg, VA, and Jennifer Clayton Hare of Seaford, VA; as well as five grandchildren: Wyatt Clayton Cooper (Lyndey Brock) of Chicago, IL, Lynne Bradshaw Cooper of Baltimore, MD, Sara Renee Pitman Cooper Anderson (Jake Anderson) of Manassas, VA, Julia Jean Hare of Winchester, VA, and Kelsey Jill Hare of Seaford, VA. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, Jonathan Wyatt Cooper and Kevin William Hare; and two great-grandchildren, Lucy Grace Anderson and Natalie Joy Anderson, all whom she adored and loved. In addition, Jean Clayton is survived by her brother, Donald Lee Brice of Miden, LA; sisters-in-law, Elsie Clayton Wiggins and Madge Brice; nieces, Judy Willis (Randal), Arlene Wiggins Barbour, Kay Brice Vanchiere (Michael), and Nancy Kopca (David); and nephews, Edward Earl Clayton, James Earl Wiggins, and Donald Lee Brice, Jr. (Rita). She also had three grandnieces and seven grandnephews. Jean Clayton was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She assisted her husband, Guy C. Clayton, DDS, with the bookkeeping for his Orthodontic practice, which was located in Hampton, VA, York County, VA, and Poquoson, VA. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri with an Associate Degree then went on to earn her Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Georgia. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Department of Agriculture in Athens, Georgia and Virginia Extension Service in Richmond, VA. She went to night school to receive her teaching certificate then taught school in Chesterfield County, VA and the City of Hampton, VA. Jean enjoyed being with her family, entertaining, golfing and gardening. In their retirement, Jean and Guy spent enjoyable years on Marco Island, FL and Naples, FL. In 2009, they returned to Virginia to be closer to family. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 11, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m. The service will be livestreamed, and COVID-19 precautions will be observed.
