Obituary of Mary Martin Hoffman

IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Mary Martin Hoffman, a long-time resident of the area, died peacefully at home in Williamsburg on July 18. Born in 1927 in Owensboro, Kentucky, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1949. At college she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. Mary became a homemaker and the mother of four boys, making home in Washington DC, Reserve LA, Birmingham AL, Wyckoff NJ and finally in Williamsburg. She was an accomplished graphic artist, specializing in watercolors. She was a well-known presence as an artist at the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center and as a docent at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. She was a past elder of the Williamsburg Presbyterian church and a member of the Williamsburg Women's Club. Her considerable kitchen skills were appreciated by all fortunate to have tried her cooking. Socializing came very natural to her, a trait passed down through her deep family roots in Kentucky. She had a smile that could light up a room and a keen ability to see the good in all people. She is survived by her husband Harmon Leslie Hoffman, Jr.; four children, Leslie (Susan), John (Pat), Alan, and Robert (Jill); four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren who brought great joy to her later years. The family extends its deep, heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers. Memorial gifts may be given to The Muscarelle Museum of Art of William and Mary and to the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Nelsen Funeral Home Williamsburg has been entrusted with arrangements.
