Obituary of Marilyn Jane Huckleberry
Marilyn Jane (Conner) Huckleberry 92, of Carmel, passed away on September 7, 2021. Marilyn was born on September 28, 1928 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Zeddie R. and Jessie Pearson Conner of Crawfordsville. Marilyn was a graduate of Shortridge High School (1946), Butler University (1950), and Indiana University where she received her master’s degree in Medical Technology (1951). She retained many life-long friends from her high school and university days and was a member of University Park Christian Church where she married Maurice S. Huckleberry on Easter Sunday 1954. Marilyn and Maurice moved to Carmel in the 1950’s where they raised 4 children and ran Northern Beach Park for several years. They were early members of Carmel Christian Church and remained so till their death. Marilyn served as an elder, was active in the choir, women’s bible study, and led the sunrise service for many years. Throughout Marilyn’s life, her work in medicine and helping patients was very important to her. She worked at IU Medical Center and later ran the private lab for Dr. Fred Hendricks for many years before retiring; bored with retirement, she later retrained at the Mayo Clinic to run the necessary laboratory procedures for Mohs surgery, and later still spent several years assisting the science department at Ivy-Tech. Marilyn lived with metastatic breast cancer for over 20 years and was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program, and at I.U. North Hospital. Marilyn loved being a “Nana” to her grandchildren and enjoyed her travels to catch-up with them wherever they lived around the U.S. and in London. In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Maurice S. Huckleberry, brother Darrell Conner, and countless pets that she was a devoted ‘mom’ to. Survivors include 4 children, Janet Bennett Ross, Mark Huckleberry, Jean Hardwick, Mary Lynn Carver; 6 grandchildren, Alyssa Bibler Fisher, Vasya Bennett, Ali Hardwick, Ryan Carver, Sarah Carver, Nicholas Carver; and her beloved cat Bootsie that has been her steadfast companion. Visitation will be held from 1pm -3pm on Saturday September 11, 2021 at Carmel Christian Church, 463 E. Main Street, Carmel IN, followed by a funeral service and celebration of Marilyn’s life at 3pm at the church. Burial will follow in Carmel Cemetery. The family of Marilyn wish to express appreciation to the staff of Sunrise on Old Meridian and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Marilyn.
