Wilfred "Bub" Atwood

Wilfred “Bub” Atwood entered into eternal life on July 19, 2010 at his home, surrounded by family. Born July 27, 1918 he was the devoted son of Jesse and Hazel (Smith) Atwood. On June 22, 1946 his life forever changed when he married Dorothy Edna Stalcup. When asked how they met, he would tell you they met on a blind date. She was standing on the front porch wearing a blue dress, eating a biscuit. “She got in the front seat and never left.” She remained not just his wife, but his best friend and sweetheart until death. She survives. A veteran of WWII, Bub was described by his grandson as “a true American hero”. Not a “save the day hero”, but an everyday hero. One who loved God, family and country, and would have fought to the death to save them. He went to work every day, church every Sunday, and devoted his entire existence to caring for his precious wife of 64 years. He set the example of a biblical husband and father for every young man he met, and he met many in his 30+ years as an ROTC clerk at Indiana University. A loving father and grandfather he is also survived by his daughter Carol Findley (Cody) son Gary Atwood, his grandchildren John Mathias (Nikki); Thomas Doyle (Deborah); Alice Flick (Robert); Jenny West; Heather Atwood (Ignacio); Tiffany Findley (Dan) and his beloved sister-in-law Sue Stalcup. In addition, he was blessed with dozens of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephew all of whom loved him beyond measure. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers Melvin and Burton, and his sister Annabelle, all of whom will surely be greeting him at Heaven’s gates! Visitation will be at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary on Wednesday, July 21, from 4:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at Arlington Methodist Church on Thursday, July 22, at 10:30am where Bub was a long standing member and through which he offered his service to the Lord. Burial with full military honors will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Arlington Methodist Church in Bub’s name.
