Obituary of Norman Carroll Allers

Norman C. Allers Sr, 93, Federal Accountant, WW2 Naval veteran, and Boy Scout leader, died on May 14 at the Hermitage Retirement Community in Alexandria VA. Memorial services will be at the Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria VA on Friday May 20. His remains will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Norman was born Sept 17, 1917 in Baltimore Md to Herman and Matilda Allers. His boyhood membership in the Sea Scouts led to his enlistment in the Naval Reserves. He graduated from Baltimore City College specializing in accounting and worked as a bank teller in Baltimore. Shortly after marrying Laura Pfeiffer in 1940, he was called to active duty in WW2 as Quartermaster First Class. He performed mine sweep operations on the Atlantic Coast followed by flagship operations in the Pacific on board the USS Rocky Mount. His ship was active at Quagaline and Guadalcanal. He concluded his tour in the Pacific as a combat landing craft instructor in Oceanside CA where he remained till 1945 with his wife Laura. After WW2 Norman and Laura moved to Liberty Heights Maryland where Norman took an auditing position at Aberdeen Proving Ground. In 1956, after having 4 children, they moved to District Heights Maryland where Norman took a job as a comptroller for AAFES at Andrews AFB. In 1959 he took a comptroller position with the AAFES Pacific Region in Ofuna Japan and moved the family to Camp Zama. He returned to District Heights Md in 1963 and continued work in Washington DC until he retired from AAFES and took an accounting position with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He was active in field recovery after hurricane Agnes in 1972. He retired from accounting in 1977. Norman remained an active leader with the Boy Scouts and became a Washington area District Commissioner. His first wife Laura died in 1966. He married Mary Germaine (Alvey) Helms in 1975 and resided with her in Clinton Md until her death in 1992. Shorty after, he moved to the Charlotte Hall veterans home in Charlotte Hall Maryland. In 2003 he moved to his final home at The Hermitage in Arlington Va. Norman is survived by his son Roger Allers and wife Deborah Lloyd, son Daniel Allers and wife Christina Wren, daughter Doris Pierro and husband Robert Pierro, grandson Paul Nelson and wife Sun No, and great grandson Kai Nelson. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Laura Pfeiffer, son Norman C Allers Jr, and second wife Mary Germaine (Alvey) Helms.
