Obituary of Dr. Harry Clark Bates Jr.
Harry Clark Bates, Jr., M.D. (Clark) of Culpeper, Virginia passed away on May 31, 2012 at the age of 94. He was born on October 19, 1917 in Brentwood, Maryland, the son of Harry C. Bates and Dora S. Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 50 years, Venita R. Bates (Nita); and his older sister, Amelia Massey. Clark moved with his family in 1920 to Arlington, Virginia, where he grew up. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1939, and received his M.D. degree from George Washington University in 1943. After an internship and residency at G.W.U. he entered the Army Medical Corps during World War II. Following the war Clark had a practice of general medicine in Arlington, Virginia from 1948-1966.. He became President of the Arlington County Medical Society in 1955. He served on the Virginia State Board of Medicine and represented Virginia in the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association. In 1958 he served as the President of the Medical Society of Virginia. In 1966 Clark accepted the position of Medical Director, and later. Vice President of Underwriting at Shenandoah Life in Roanoke, Virginia. While in Roanoke he served as President of the Kiwanis Club,and other organizations. From 1976 to 1988 he also served on the Board of Directors of the AAA of Virginia. Clark is survived by his younger brother, David, of Ohio; his children, H. Clark Bates, III (Margaret) of Charlottesville, Virginia; Jacquelyn B. Leahy (William) of Oxford,Georgia; and Robert K. Bates of Culpeper, Virginia; his grandchildren, Kelly L. Whitney (Evan) of Arlington, Massachusetts; Alan W. Bates (Alana) of Waynesboro, Virginia; Megan Leahy of Atlanta, Georgia; and Susan M. Brown (Christopher) of Waynesboro, Virginia; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Little Fork Episcopal Church in Rixeyville, Virgina on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 11 A.M. Visitation of family will be held at the Clore-English Funeral Home in Culpeper on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 7-9 P.M.
