Ella Bass Cowan
September 24, 1921 – October 24, 2012

Ella Bass Cowan went to be with the Lord on Oct. 24, 2012. She was a member of the Moyock Baptist Church and Kempsville Baptist Church, where she was active in the community and for many years served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Dorcus Sunday School class. Ella was a past Matron of the Kempsville Chapter #173 Order of the Eastern Star. She devoted her life to her family and friends and holds the distinction of being the best mother anyone could have.
Ella was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Bill Cowan.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shirley Roebuck and husband Ron, and Lyn Vance and husband Steve; four granddaughters, Tammy Mullis and husband David, Kelly Long and husband Mike, Stacey Gilliland and husband David, and Janie Vance and husband Jack; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Jessica Hazelgrove and husband Bill.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at the funeral home officiated by Rev. Victor Ramsey with burial to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park.
