Obituary of John "Jack" L. McGrath, Sr.
Virginia Beach – John “Jack” L. McGrath, Sr., 84 went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, October 27, 2012. He was born in Florahome, Florida on February 28, 1928. Mr. McGrath was the son of the late Richard and Nita McGrath of Florahome, Florida and Florence, South Carolina. Mr. McGrath was a World War II veteran and a proud member of the United States Navy for 21 years. He also served as a civilian for 41 years at the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia until his retirement as a Production Superintendent in 1987. Jack was a member of the Production Superintendents Association of Naval Shore Establishments, Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia, Apprentice and Alumni Association and the FRA Branch 5, of Norfolk, Virginia. Jack found great pleasure and tremendous pride by serving as the Chairman of the Board and a Member of the Board of Directors of Chartway Federal Credit Union. He also served on the Board of Directors for the We Promise Foundation and remained active with Chartway Federal Credit Union and the We Promise Foundation until the day of his passing. He was a faithful member of Kempsville Baptist Church and loved the Lord and his church family. Jack was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor. His devotion to serving others was his greatest calling and our greatest gift. Jack loved sports and was a faithful fan of the Washington Redskins and William and Mary “Tribe” football. For the last 10 years, Jack was devoted to the care of the love of his life, Patsy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Patsy R. McGrath, his children John L. McGrath, Jr. and his wife Donna of Herndon Virginia, Richard A. McGrath and his wife Sheri of Virginia Beach Virginia, and 4 granddaughters – Kathleen Schneider, Sarah McGrath, Alexandra McGrath and Ashley McGrath, and 2 great-grandsons – Maddox Schneider and Ryder Morris. He is also survived by his brother Richard M. McGrath of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and his sister Anita Harrelson of Sumter, South Carolina. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, daughter Kathleen Elizabeth McGrath, brother James W. McGrath, and mother-in-law Ruby E Dugo. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the dedicated and compassionate caregivers who enrich our lives daily with their constant uplifting spirit and unwavering friendship. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A service to celebrate Jack’s life will be conducted at 11am on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Kempsville Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the We Promise Foundation.
