Floyd Eugene Howard

Floyd Eugene Howard, 86, longtime resident of Union County, died Monday, October 29, 2012 at Reid Hospital, Richmond.
A native of Harmony Township in Union County, Floyd was born March 26, 1926 to Eugene F. and Verna Glaub Howard. He graduated from Short High School and received his degree in animal science from Purdue University with highest distinction. Floyd was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, serving as an Electrician Third Class aboard submarines in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. From 1955 to 1962, he conducted classes on agricultural development to area farmers that had returned from the military. He retired from OSHA in Indianapolis in 2006 where he was a construction inspector for 37 years. Floyd was a member of Edwards United Methodist Church and had been active in many community projects, including the Union County Chamber of Commerce and as president of the Treaty Line Museum board. , He had a unique sense of humor and was known for his creative and inventive abilities.
Floyd is survived by his sons: Dale E. Howard and his wife, Ruthie of Greensfork; Jay R. Howard of Indianapolis; his grandchildren: Sonja Richards and her husband, Eric of Kendallville; Robert Howard of Greensfork; Jennifer Howard; Rachel Cook and her husband, Philip; Eli Howard; Andy Frost of Greensfork; four great grandchildren; his sister: Geneva Carson of Liberty; a nephew: Randy Carson and his wife, Jenni of Liberty; and an extended family of friends.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, the former Phyllis Caskey who died March 12, 1996 and a nephew: Steve Carson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty. Interment will follow in Dunlapsville Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 122 and VFW Post 1473. Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. where memorial contributions may be made to the Hand-in-Hand Adult Daycare of Richmond.
