Obituary of Joseph Anthony Barbour
Joseph A. “Little Joe” Barbour, 70, of Terre Haute, passed away at 8 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2012, at his home with his two best friends, Alley and Shadow (two small black dogs) and a brother, Jerry. Joe was born June 3, 1942, to Verna Opal (Ferran) Barbour and John Barbour of Terre Haute. He attended Gerstmeyer High School and at 17 he joined the U.S. Navy. He was in the Navy for seven years. He served aboard the USS Regal for most of his first enlistment and Rota, Spain and Washington, D.C., for his second. He received an associate’s degree in drafting from IVY Tech and worked as a detail draftsman for a time. He worked as a draftsman, small engine repairman, Vigo County Parks, Roselawn Cemetery, and as a maintenance person for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. He worked at the YMCA and various other jobs and was always trying to help other people and especially veterans. He loved to mushroom hunt, fish, and help out with events at the VFW. He was on the Color Guard at VFW Post 972 and was proud to pipe fellow sailors over the side when they passed away. He was a life member of VFW Post 972, a member of Post 346 American Legion, 40/8, Vigo Conservation Club, and National Rifle Association. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward l. Barbour and John S. (Beanie) Barbour (Roberta his wife); and a sister, Rhea J. Tucker (Robert her husband). He is survived by three sisters, Janetta Dellacca and husband David (deceased), Norma McMullen and husband Earl, Linda McDowell and husband Mike; one brother, Jerry W. Barbour. He had many nieces and nephews, Tim and Bonnie McMullen, Amy and Stephanie Dellacca, John Scott Jr., Bryan and Kevin McDowell, Jerry Wayne Jr., Chad, Drew (deceased) and Jennifer (also deceased). Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services for Joe will be Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at 1 p.m. VFW Post 972 will perform military honors. Chaplain Don Smock will preside over the services.
