Lee J. Radek
1943-2013
Lee was born and raised in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Ann and Frank Radek. He attended St. Rita’s Elementary School and St. Procopius Academy. During his childhood on the south side he developed a lifelong love of the White Sox and Da Bears, as well as an unsurpassed appreciation for the music of Elvis Presley.
Following his graduation from Marquette University in 1965, Lee served in the U.S. Army for two years in Korea. Upon his return, he enrolled in the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law, where he met his wife, Jill. After graduating cum laude in 1971, Lee moved to Virginia and joined the U.S. Department of Justice under the Attorney General's Honors Program. In 1976 he was one of three attorneys selected to form the Public Integrity Section of the Department's Criminal Division. He became a Deputy Chief of that Section in 1978. In 1992, he was appointed to the position of director, Asset Forfeiture Office, and in 1994, he returned to the Public Integrity Section as its chief, where he served until 2001, when he became senior counsel in the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section. In 2000, Lee was the recipient of the Henry E. Petersen award, the Criminal Division’s highest honor. Among his other duties, Lee was a member of the FBI Criminal Undercover Operations Review Committee, and was the Department's representative to the Financial Action Task Force-the international anti-money laundering body. He retired in 2005.
Lee was a passionate golfer and frequent winner of the annual Devitt Open. An active member of the Springfield Golf & Country Club, Lee participated in numerous leagues and tournaments. He was a season ticket holder for both the Washington Capitals and Nationals. Lee enjoyed his retirement immensely, as he was able to golf regularly and travel with his wife.
A proud father and devoted husband, Lee is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jill, his children Megan, Matthew and wife Stephanie, and Caitlin, his sister Caren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Marquette University Blue and Gold fund, http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/blue-gold/marq-blue-gold-body.html, or to a charity of your choosing.
