Obituary of James M. Houck
James M. Houck, 91, of Greencastle passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013. He was born on September 22, 1921 in Putnam County to David W. Houck and Norris McPherson Houck. Jim attended Manhattan School; was a graduate of Greencastle High School, DePauw University and graduated from the IU School of Law in Indianapolis with Honors. Mr. Houck served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. His training at Georgetown University was as a Japanese linguist. In 1962, he opened a law practice in Greencastle. Later that same year, he became the Putnam County Prosecuting Attorney, a position that he held for four terms. Mr. Houck and Judge Francis Hamilton were responsible for ending segregation in Putnam County, prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Jim was a member of the American Legion Post #58, B.P.O.E. # 1077, and the Indiana Bar Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-grandson, Samuel Papion Houck. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Helen Jome Houck; two sons, David J Houck and wife, Carolyn of Greencastle and Robert E. Houck of Ellettsville; grandchildren, Ellen Mercer Looney, Cynthia Mercer Tottleben and Andrew K. Houck; and a great-granddaughter, Brina Tottleben. Private graveside services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. John Eley officiating. Memorials may be made to Asbury Towers Endowment.
