COL Richard Whitey Andrew Miller (USA Ret.)

RICHARD ANDREW MILLER Colonel, USA (Ret.) Richard Miller (“Whitey” to many friends) died at Virginia Hospital Center on August 9 from multiple illnesses, including Leukemia (CLL) contracted from exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Born to Albert and Minta Miller on February 26, 1930 in Shawnee, OK. Richard attended two years at the University of Oklahoma before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1953. Originally an Infantry officer, he became a Ranger-Parachutist. He later transferred to Armored Cavalry and served in many capacities around the world. While aide-de-camp to the CG of the 10th Division in Germany, he met Jane Kennicott Lillard. They were married in Stuttgart in 1956 and began their military life together. His career included varied, challenging and interesting assignments, including two tours in Vietnam where he advised ARVN Armor units and later became CO of the 2d Squadron of the 1st Cavalry Regiment and then commanded the 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, receiving awards of two bronze stars and a silver star. He taught Military History at the University of Scranton, served three times in the Pentagon and eleven years in Germany. The latter included tours at V Corps Frankfurt, VII Corps Stuttgart, and then in Stuttgart-Boeblingen as the Commander of the 3d Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. The family also enjoyed two years with the British Army of the Rhine and ended assignments in Germany with four years in Garmisch, where Richard was CO of the Armed Forces Recreation Center, with units in Garmisch, Chiemsee and Berchtesgaden. He was a graduate of the US Army War College and received a MA in history from the University of Scranton and a MSBA from Boston University. After retirement in 1983, Richard worked for the Mountbatten Fund, University of Southampton, England, and later as Interim Director of Facility Services for Washington National Cathedral and the three schools located on the Cathedral Close. In addition to Jane of Arlington, Richard is survived by five daughters: Rebecca (COL John) Tisson of Carlisle, PA; Lucile (Jack) Gordon of Arlington; Minta (COL James) Caine of Fernandina Beach, FL; Amy Miller of Arlington; Catherine (Gary) Hennig of Arlington; and eight grandchildren: CPT Miller Tisson; Hannah T. Shields (1LT Terrence); 2LT Brewster Tisson; Amelia Gordon and Grant Gordon; Caswell Hennig, Samuel Hennig and Witt Hennig. A funeral service will be held on August 20 at the Old Post Chapel, with burial to follow at the West Point, NY Cemetery. A gathering for friends and family will be held at the Ft.
