Otis Sonny Lee Patterson Jr.

Otis L. Patterson, Jr. went home on September 26, 2013. He was a Christian and an American patriot. Known to his friends as “Sonny”, he was born on November 7, 1931 in Richmond to Otis, Sr. and Lucille Andrews Patterson. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Annette Patterson Hemby. He served as an M4 tank commander in the Korean War and earned the Bronze Star for valor at Pork Chop Hill. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Bethea Patterson, two children, Susan Patterson Robins and David Lee Patterson (Melissa Compton Patterson), and six grandchildren, Charlotte Robins, Claiborne Robins, Rebecca Robins, Daniel Patterson, James Patterson and Henry Patterson. Sonny operated a small masonry contracting business for forty-nine years. He was also a gifted carpenter and welder, and could build or repair almost anything. He earned a recreational pilot’s license in his 20’s and flew small planes. He later made metal sculpture as a hobby and was a member of the Richmond Art Association. Sonny had a humble, quiet nature and loved history, reading, yard work and Genealogy.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 29, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home 1771 N. Parham Road. His life will be celebrated on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 11:00 am at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA.
