Ballard L. Jewell

Ballard Lavadie Jewell, 91, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2013. Born on November 25, 1922, Ballard was preceded in death by his parents, Ella T. and Hubert H. Jewell; his wife, Gwen Sirjoo Jewell, M.D; his brothers, Wayne T. of Ashland and Robert L. of Doswell. He is survived by his sister, Anne J. Bales; two brothers, Hubert and Richey; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ballard graduated from the University of Chicago after serving in the army in Korea where he received the Purple Heart. He returned to Richmond to continue his employment with the C&O Railroad, retiring in the early 80’s. Ballard was an expert telegrapher and belonged to the American Telegraph & Morse Code Club where he participated in many of the exhibitions. Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy, Ashland, VA 23005. The family would like to thank the staff at Imperial Plaza and his care giver, Darlene Morris for their continuous support.
