Obituary of William Kaylor Monger
William Kaylor Monger, 96, of Harrisonburg, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2014 at Sentara RMH Medical Center. He was born on February 28, 1917 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Ralph Showalter and Lillye Kaylor Monger. K graduated from Harrisonburg High School, attended Bridgewater College, and graduated from VPI in 1938. He was a lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist Church. After graduating from VPI, K worked at his family’s business, R. S. Monger and Sons, Inc. and served as president from 1955 to 1990. He proudly served his country during WWII in England, Germany and France. K married Helen Irene Huffman on May 11, 1942 in Spartanburg, SC. K was an active member of his community and church. He was an original member of the Harrisonburg Electric Commission and the Blue Ridge Community College Board. He served as president of both these organizations. He was a member of B. P. O. E. Harrisonburg Lodge, #450 and the Virginia Tech Hokie Club. K is survived by four daughters, Sandra M. Shifflett of Harrisonburg, Susan M. Shifflett and husband, Rick, of Bridgewater, Shirley M. Beale and fiancé, Reid B. Wimer of Virginia Beach, and Sunni Jean Monger of Harrisonburg. He is survived by five grandchildren, Carol S. Stickley and husband, Chris, David W. Shifflett, J. W. Higgs and wife, Kim, Jim Higgs and wife, Stephanie, and Andrew W. Beale and wife, Sandy. K is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Jordan, Dakota, Jacie, William, Chloe, Katherine, Hudson and Gavin; one sister, Dr. Unity M. Powell of Covington, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, brother, John H. Monger, and sisters, Anita M. Crawford, Margaret M. “Peggy Sue” Miller, and a son-in-law, Greg Beale. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:00 PM, Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 9, at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Pastor Bob Talbott and Dr. E. Thomas Murphy, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, with Military Rites by Dayton American Legion Post #27. With a strong Christian faith, K loved his family and friends and lived life to the fullest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army or Massanutten Regional Library.
