Rene Dirk Koun

Dr. Rene Dirk Koun, Jr., passed away on March 29, 2014. Born in Rumson, New Jersey, he was the second son of Ann Frances and Rene D. Koun’s four boys. The Koun family lived in many different places but growing up as a youth at The United States Military Academy, West Point, New York was his favorite.
Dr. Koun was a proud alumnus of The University of Notre Dame. He also graduated from Seton Hall College of Medicine & Dentistry and completed his training in Oral Surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in New York and New York University. He practiced in Newport News for over forty years. He belonged to numerous Oral and Maxillofacial Societies. He was a member of the James River Country Club, The University Club in New York, and the Warwick Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Diane White Koun, whom he met and married in New York. He is also survived by two daughters in Richmond, Christina K. McCoy, her husband Tim and their two sons Cole and Jack; and by Melinda K. Smith, her husband Jody and their three daughters Addison, Ellie, and Perry. Two brothers, Cornelius J. Koun and Michael J. Koun also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John N. Koun.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held on April 2, at 11:30am, at The William and Mary Catholic Campus Ministry (formerly known as St. Bede Church) at 10 Harrison Avenue, Williamsburg 23185. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Virginia Living Museum, the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choice.
