Obituary of Delbert Thomas Imel
Delbert Thomas Imel, 74 of Greensburg, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis. Delbert was born on March 3, 1940 in Charleston, Indiana the son of Ernest and Maggie (Reynolds) Imel . He attended schools between the Charlestown and Greensburg area. In 1957, at the age of 17, Delbert joined the United States Marine Corp. He spent 30 years in the Marines. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, Marine Corp. League, and DAV. He was the Service Officer for the American Legion Post 129 for many years. Delbert worked many different public safety jobs after his time in the Marines including: the Columbus Police Department, a security officer in Indianapolis, as well as some undercover and detective work. He also worked at Valeo, several bakeries in Indianapolis and Batesville; he taught for the Jobs Core at Camp Atterbury and was a project manager for the coast Guard in Kodiak, Alaska. On February 2, 1991, he married Wanda Pike-Collins at the Star Baptist Church in Decatur County and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter Joyce (Dan) Pierson, Grand Children - Cory (Stacy) Pierson and Holly (Josh Greene) Pierson, and Great Granddaughters – April and Nicole Pierson and Danielle Greene all of Greensburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sisters – Mildred Imel and Helen Montgomery, two brothers – Richard and Ernest Imel, and one Granddaughter Danielle Pierson. Visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 5PM – 8PM at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Delbert’s Funeral Service will begin at 10AM on Thursday, May 8 also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Star Baptist Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 129.
