Obituary of Todd Allen Phillips
Phillips, Todd Allen, 55, of Richmond Virginia, was fatally injured in an auto accident on Friday, June 17, 2016 in Richmond, Virginia. Todd was born on October 30, 1960 and was a graduate of Douglas Freeman high school in Richmond. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Math at the University of Richmond, and Masters of Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia. Todd is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 30 years, Kelly Wycall Phillips, sons Todd (TJ) and Trevor, parents Bob and Gail, sister Page O’Connor and her husband Billy, nieces and nephews, Meredith and Tanner Jennings, Kaela O’Connor, and Cadie Wycall, parents-in-law Ted and Kaye Wycall, sister-in-law Kim Parker and her husband Ted, brother-in-law Teddy Wycall and his wife Julia, as well as the entire Mills E Godwin High School family. An avid basketball player and accomplished musician, Todd started his career as a nuclear power plant operator for Dominion Virginia Power. He began coaching boys basketball at Mills E Godwin High School in 1991 and in 2003 found his true calling as a math and AP teacher at Godwin. He was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including PTSA Teacher of the Year, National Honor Society Teacher of the Year, Gilman Teacher of the Year, and the R.E.B Award for Excellence in Teaching. Most recently, Todd was the founder and Director of Godwin’s Specialty Center for Medical Sciences, the 9th grade basketball coach, assistant coach for varsity basketball, the girls tennis assistant coach and the varsity math coach. Often referred to as “Bruce with a calculator” he participated every year in the school’s variety show, and was well known for his love of Star Wars and his spot on impressions of Forrest Gump. He encouraged his students to believe in themselves, celebrate their unique talents, and “embrace their inner nerd.” A beloved figure in the school and in the community, Todd was known for his dedication, caring, and sense of humor. He was an extraordinary educator, devoted father, and best friend and soul mate to his wife. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life for the Godwin community to honor Todd will be held on Wednesday, June 22 at 7:00 pm in the Godwin gymnasium. The family will receive visitors on Friday, June 24, from 3:14 pm to 7:00 pm at the Epiphany Lutheran Church at 1400 Horsepen Road in Richmond; funeral services will be held at the church on Saturday, June 25 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to the Coach T-Philly Memorial Scholarship Fund.
