Obituary of Gregory Augustus Hebron
Gregory A. Hebron Now Rests In Peace (October 13, 1957-June 14, 2017) July 1 is his homegoing celebration! Many knew him as a great friend and colleague who they called “Big Smooth,” “Hebby,” “Hucklebuck,” or just “Big Greg.” To his family, Greg was known for being a wonderful son, brother, cousin, and uncle. A Washington, D.C. native, Greg was built like and as strong as an ox. But the big fella ran and leaped like a gazelle – which made him a great athlete who excelled in all sports – particularly football and baseball in high school. He went on to study business and marketing at Northern Virginia Community College and Saint Paul’s College. After several years of study, Greg decided to pursue a career with the U.S. Government. He secured a job with the Department of Justice Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), rising to the position of ATF Bureau Mail Program Manager. One colleague said, “he had a beautiful soul.” Another remembers him as “… ALWAYS positive, kind, welcoming, and always on top of his job." Greg said it was the greatest job anyone could ever have and he had the “co-workers you would be envious of.” Humble and gentle, Greg possessed a melodic, bass voice and loved to use it when listening to a variety of music – a hobby he shared with his nephew, Joe Piper III. He and his niece, Naysa Piper, shared his affinity for DC and Marvel comics. The two of them often compared notes and talked about the characters and every television and movie that featured one. But in addition to comics, Greg was well read on many subjects. Above all, he was a rabid Georgetown University basketball and Washington Redskins football fan, the later he shared with his brother, Anthony Hebron, cousin, Deno Hebron, and late sister Joann Piper and late aunt Sandra Hebron. Greg loved to dress – rocking ties, sports caps and a variety of shoes that compared to none. His nephews (Joe Piper III, Anthony K. Hebron and Joseph Boone) and brothers (Anthony and Derrick Piper as well as his sisters, Tarrah Prince, Tonia Boone and Torrey Piper) benefitted quite handsomely from Greg’s bevvy of the finest brand name clothing and accessories. As everyone knows, Greg was a family man – first and foremost. His family cherishes him for being forgiving and giving of himself and his resources – embodied in his familiar responses: "...you don't have to say thank you” or “you don’t owe me anything, we're family!" He also treasured his cousins: Debra Wosa, Deno Hebron (Delores), Scottie Hebron (Sharon, Marcus, and Madison), Albert Hebron, Jr. (Beverly, Aaron and Andrew), Mary White, Wilhelmina Ashton, Craig Hebron and Jacqueline Hebron, Ellen Hebron Fofanah, Emma Hebron Harris, Patricia Hebron Smith, Diana Hebron Miller, and Tina Hebron Mingo. Greg also admired his grand cousins Joseph Hebron Jr. (Mary Hebron) and Carroll Hebron Sr. (Gertrude Hebron) and aunt the late Sandra Hebron. The men he looked up to the most were his uncle, Albert Hebron Sr. (Pauline), and late father, Joe Piper, Jr. Every boy or girl would have loved to have had Greg as his or her uncle. But only Joe Piper III, Joseph Boone, Anthony K. Hebron, Riyah Prince and Naysa Piper had that privilege. Greg loved and cared for them as if they were his own. He showered them with compassion, kind words, wisdom and gifts when he had the opportunity. A lot of the latter. Every new toy or pair of shoes, if they mentioned it to him, they would receive it. He doted them so much that even Santa Claus was jealous. But Greg did more than just give gifts. He showered his family with his love and his energies. He spent the final hours preceding his death feeding and caring for his mom, Shirley Piper. Visitation will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, followed immediately by the funeral services, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, located at 10565 Main Street, Fairfax. He will be laid to rest immediately after the ceremony at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Hwy, Manassas – next to his beloved sister and favorite sibling, the late Joann Piper. In honor of Greg’s love and caring for his nieces and nephews, the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a FedChoice Federal Credit Union Trust Fund at ATF (Account # 727844-15).
