Dorothy Andrews Owens

On Saturday, December 16, 2017 after a brief illness. Survived by her husband of 74 years, William W. Owens, III of Arlington, Virginia; sons, William W. Owens, IV (Carol) and Stuart N. Owens (Diane); grandchildren, Nancy M. Barry (John), Kristen O. Morgan (Melvin) and Andrew R. Owens; great-grandchildren, Haley B. Yunker (Eric), Carson J. Barry and Kennedy N. Morgan. Dorothy was born on October 23, 1921 in Forney, Texas. Her childhood and youth were spent in and around White Plains, New York. Following graduation from Cornell University, where she met her husband-to-be, she moved to Arlington, Virginia in 1942, and was married at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in 1943. Following the birth of her children and through the 1950's, Dorothy worked as a full-time mother and was active in community activities. After going back to college and receiving her master's degree, Dorothy enjoyed a career in academia, first as an associate professor of literature, then as an academic advisor, at American University in Washington, DC. In her leisure time, Dorothy enjoyed acting, and performed in many theater productions of the Neighbors' Club in Arlington. She and her husband enjoyed learning about world cultures and traveled extensively around the globe. Of all of her interests and activities, Dorothy most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at 2 p.m. on December 21, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Arlington.
