Obituary of Betty M. Eager
Betty (Hill) Eager, 95, of Harlan, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at The Laurels of DeKalb. Born March 19, 1923 at home in Waterloo, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late George and Jennie (Schaffer) Hill. She graduated from Harlan High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1941. She was employed by Lincoln Life Insurance and then by Harvester. Betty married the late Lawrence “Dale” Eager on February 10, 1946 in Spencerville, Ind., and enjoyed being a farmer’s wife, gardening and baking. When college expenses for their children started, she worked at Sheller Globe, making steering wheels for 12 years. Betty and her sisters, Eunice & Jean, owned and operated Harlan Dry Goods, Harlan, Ind., for three years. Betty and Dale became members of North Scipio United Methodist Church on April 9, 1950. They both were involved in youth ministry and teaching Sunday school. Betty was the craft lady for vacation bible school for many years. Faith and family were most important throughout her life. She lived out her faith serving God and her family in every way she could. She is survived by her children; Steven (Kathie) Eager, Donna Fordham, and Brian (Barbara) Eager, all of Harlan; six grandchildren, Pam (Andy) Ewing of Lafayette, Ind., Karen Maddox of Westfield, Ind., Brad (Machelle) Fordham of Leo, Ind., Rebecca Eager of Silver Spring, Maryland, Benjamin (Meena) Eager of Greenwood, Ind., and Brent (Elizabeth) Eager of Odenton, Maryland; five great-grandchildren, Trevor Maddox, Carlee Ewing, William Eager, Harrison Eager, and Cadence Fordham; sister, Jean Perkins of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Harvey, Fred, and Homer Hill; sisters, Dorothy Stone, Grace Beck, Eunice Kelley, and infant sister, Thelma Hill; son-in-law, Paul Fordham; and great-granddaughter, Claire Fordham. Funeral Service will be 11:30 am on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at North Scipio United Methodist Church, 23628 SR 37, Harlan, with calling from 10:00am until the start of the service. Pastor Joseph Andrews officiating. Burial at Scipio Cemetery, Harlan. Memorials may be made to the church or to The Laurels of DeKalb.
