Leo Fred Downey
February 15, 1947 – January 23, 2019

Leo Fred Downey, 71, of Rosedale, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at his home. He was born on February 15, 1947, in Terre Haute to Leo and Helen (Jackson) Downey. He married Betty Hamilton on November 6, 1967 and together they raised two children.
Leo is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty (Hamilton) Downey of Rosedale; children, Lisa Smith and husband Randy of Williamsport, and Leo Bruce Downey and wife Hope of Terre Haute; and grandchildren, Blake and Ciara Childress, Leo Rick and Shelby Downey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bruce Downey.
Leo graduated from Gerstmeyer Tech in 1965. He worked for many years as a welder and fabricator at Winslow Scale and was a member of the United Steelworkers of America. Leo loved to be outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, gardening, and doing yardwork. He liked to go for drives on the country backroads. Occasionally, Leo enjoyed going on trips to the casino. He was an avid NASCAR fan. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon and he recently became a fan of Kyle Larson. Leo will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mattoxwood.com
