Edna S. Joyner, age 87, of Oakton, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Edna was born on Christmas Eve of 1931, in Pinetops, North Carolina to Mary and Benjamin R. Stokes. Mrs. Joyner leaves behind her beloved children, Russell (Rebecca) Joyner and Karen (Brian) Dunlap; siblings Patricia Brown and James Stokes; her cherished grandchildren Sarah Joyner Ochs, Kelly Dunlap and Kevin Dunlap. Edna was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, John R. Joyner; her parents, Mary and Benjamin R Stokes; siblings Luther Stokes, Blanche Tyndall and John Stokes. Edna was actively involved in St. Matthew's United Methodist Church for 49 dedicated years, she was an active member in the United Methodist Women, and above all she pleased God. She was always giving of her time and talents and never said no when someone was in need. She was a long time Usher at St. Matthew’s and loved to help the staff make Sundays run smoothly. A fiercely intelligent woman, she graduated from Greensboro College, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a Master’s Degree. She began her career as a math teacher until she decided to stay home to raise her children. She went back to work after her children were grown to be an accountant for a small business and ultimately retired from her job at Business Management Resources Associates at the age of 85. She was also a PEO Member and formerly on the Board of Trustees for Ferrum College. Mrs. Joyner was a very independent and active woman who could never sit still for long. In addition to her many hours of service to the church, she loved to play tennis and continue to play well into her 80s. She spent time traveling with her family and with the church. She spent at least a week in the Outer Banks each year with her family. Despite her always active lifestyle, she found time to enjoy reading, knitting, quilting, and giving love to her two cats.
