Obituary of Virginia Neligh Quaintance
Virginia Neligh Quaintance, 91, of Culpeper, VA, died suddenly at home on April 7, 2019. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 30, 1927, to the late Earl Allison Neligh and Eila Nancy Rees Neligh. She married the late Dr. Rupert Wilson Quaintance, Jr. on March 15, 1951. Moved by compassion and an inherently generous nurturing nature, Virginia was convinced of her calling at an early age. As a young teen, she volunteered at a local hospital, and later attended nursing school, earning her RN degree from Indianapolis General Hospital School for Nurses in 1948. As a member of the last class of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps program, the experience deeply impacted her on many levels and largely influenced her lifetime devotion to healthcare. Upon graduation, she worked at the same hospital where she met a young intern, destined to become her husband. The young couple moved to Culpeper where Virginia worked alongside her husband to establish a medical practice, later devoting her skills fulltime to motherhood. As a founding member of the Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary, Virginia, along with the other Jayceettes, spearheaded the fundraising effort to construct a local hospital. In 1960, four years after the effort began, Culpeper Memorial Hospital opened to the delight of the community. Upon the loss of her husband, to whom she was completely devoted, Virginia resumed service with the Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Culpeper Baptist Church, where she served in various capacities on various committees during her many years of membership. Virginia’s kind nurturing temperament, sparkling eyes, quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and endearing delight at serving as the target of any joke, as well as her tenacious commitment to following Christ and her boundless love of country will be missed by all that knew her. Virginia is survived by her children, Rupert Wilson Quaintance, III (Karen) of Culpeper; Ellen Leslie Quaintance of Culpeper; Kemper Allison Quaintance of Culpeper; and Susan Virginia Quaintance Ferguson (Roy) of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Rupert Wilson Quaintance, IV; Christian Nelson Quaintance (Jennifer); Andrew Nathan Ferguson; Stuart Matthew Ferguson (Amy); and Mark Benjamin Ferguson; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Christian Quaintance, Baron Cohen Quaintance, and Garrett Elias Ferguson. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Elsa Jean Neligh Sample, and Ruby Pearl Neligh Ronningen. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 South West Street, Culpeper, VA, with Rev. Dan Carlton and Rev. Bert Browning officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery will [immediately follow the service]. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, VA.
