Obituary of Gary W. Martens
Gary went to be with our Lord on April 8, 2019. He was born March 4, 1947 to Howard and Edna Martens in Greenville, KY and moved to Evansville the following year. He graduated from North High School in 1965 and continued his education attending U of E and USI. Gary worked in the local banking industry for over 30 years until he medically retired in 2002. He was a member of Oak Hill Presbyterian Church and Christian Fellowship Church. Gary was active in local sports as a soccer referee and as a competitive shooter. He was an NRA instructor, competitor and range official. Gary earned his Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1986 and shooting in the Presidents 100 matches. He competed in the Camp Perry National Matches for many years as well as many other competitions around the United States. He was also honored to be selected and served as a Range Official for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and for the Pan American games that same year. Gary was very active locally with Daniel Boone and Red Brush Gun Clubs as well as the Indiana State Rifle and Pistol Association. He is survived by his brother, Barry (Sherrie) of Newburgh; nephews, Jake Martens (Kathy) of Indianapolis, IN and Matt Martens (Carmen) of Melbourne Beach, FL; niece, Melissa Mills (Keith) of Overland Park, KS; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Alexander East Chapel officiated by Rev. David Niednagel with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The NRA Foundation.
