Caryl Gassman
September 13, 1932 – June 3, 2019

Caryl Gassman, 86, passed away on June 3, 2019. Caryl is preceded in death by her parents Gustave and Cecile Shinske and her beloved Husband of 58 years, Lawrence Gassman. Caryl leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving children Audrey and Richard Gassman; a host of other relatives; and her cherished dog, Maddie.
Caryl was one of the few women who received her Bachelor of Science in Teaching and her Board of Educators Certificate in 1946. She was a proud educator who shared her wealth of knowledge in many areas. In 1953 Caryl married the love of her life, Lawrence. They moved to Chicago where they had their daughter, Audrey and then their son, Richard. They moved to Puerto Rico, New York, and Norfolk, Virginia. While in Norfolk Caryl taught in the Public Schools System and the Hebrew Academy. After their time in Norfolk they moved to Northern Virginia and Caryl retired from teaching. After retirement Caryl took care of her husband, Lawrence, when he was diagnosed Parkinson’s disease. After he passed in 2011 Caryl enjoyed spending time at home, tending to the house, and knitting.
A graveside service for Caryl will be on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 10 am at King David Memorial Gardens, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Caryl’s name to the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts (www.wolftrap.org), The Animal League (www.theanimalleague.org), or an animal shelter of your choice.
