Helen Virginia (Heald) Sellers was born May 16, 1926 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Jack Mahoney and Margaret Corkill Heald and grew up in Dalhart, Texas. During High School, the family moved to Corpus Christi, TX where her father worked for the US Navy then joined the Coast Guard during World War II. Helen graduated from Corpus Christi High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Corpus Christi Jr. College. She also worked as the control engineer at radio station KRIS. Helen met her future husband Naval Flight Cadet Harry Seagrove Sellers while living in Corpus Christi. The Heald family would invite Navy Cadets over to their home after church for a lemonade social get together. Harry would play the piano to entertain. They married on Sunday, February 3, 1946 at the First Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. The next day they left Corpus Christi for Harry’s first assignment as an Ensign at Ream Field, CA. From there, Navy life saw them living in over 35 different residences over the next 30 years. After Harry’s final Command of the Aircraft Carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt and a tour in the Pentagon, they continued to reside in Arlington, VA.
Helen is survived by her sons Darrow Harry Sellers (Gail) of Salinas, CA; Richard Lynn Sellers (Jacqueline) of Arlington, VA; 5 grandchildren-Ron, Rebekah, Suzanne, Matthew, and Christine; two great grandchildren Diane and Brooke; and a brother Jack M. Heald Jr (Cynthia) of Tucson, AZ.
