Obituary of John Edgar Ahlbrand
John E. Ahlbrand, 92, of Columbus died Wednesday January 8, 2020 2:20 a.m. at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility. John was born July 23, 1927 in Columbus, the son of Martin H. and Mamie Rousch Ahlbrand, He married Carole E. Parker December 16, 1950 in Columbus; she survives. The graduated from Columbus High School in 1944 entering the Army Air Force as an air cadet from 1944-1945. He continued as an aircraft and engine mechanic until 1946. He attended Purdue University 1947-1953 graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he worked for Cummins in sales, moving to the New York office in 1958. He left Cummins in 1961 becoming Vice-president of Sales for Silent Hoist and Crane in Brooklyn, NY. He lived in Merrick, NY on Long Island, returning to Columbus in 2007 after retiring from S.H. & C. While living on Long Island, he enjoyed Jones Beach and the theatre in Manhattan. He traveled to Europe often, Italy being his favorite. He was an avid stamp collector, interested in aviation and a member of The Columbus Area Railroad Club. Survivors besides his wife include, sons, John M. Ahlbrand of Rollinsville, CO, S. Matthew (Ferrell) Ahlbrand of Columbus; Brad J. (Christine) of Woodhaven, NY; granddaughter, Katie E. (Mark) Fabis of Sydney, Australia; step-granddaughter Nicole E. (Chad) Reitmeyer of Bloomington; great grandchildren, Lincoln and Claudia Fabis of Sydney; step-great-granddaughter, Ava Reitmeyer of Bloomington; brother, Ray A. Ahlbrand of Port Charlotte, FL; sisters-in-law, Catherine Ahlbrand and Jeri Ahlbrand; brother-in-law Robert E. Akin of Tamarac, FL. He was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Martin Jr. Ahlbrand, David L. Ahlbrand; sister, Mary June Akin. Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 E. 17th Street Columbus 47201. A private celebration of life and inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements by Hathaway~Myers Chapel on Pearl Street.
