Dr. Arthur William Gatesy, age 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 26th at his residence in Four Seasons Retirement Center, Columbus, IN. He was born February 18, 1930 in Westfield, New Jersey, to his parents, the late Julius Geczy and Elizabeth (Mokray) Geczy. He and his surviving wife of 62 years, Florence, had been residents of the Four Seasons Retirement Community in Columbus since 2012. He was a member of the Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church. Arthur “Art” Gatesy grew up in Garwood, New Jersey and attended Garwood High School. He served in the United States Navy as a Dental Technician during the Korean War for two years. After the war, he graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science degree. On June 16, 1957 he married Florence Mary Maurer of Elizabeth, New Jersey. Art gained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Temple University School of Dentistry in 1960 and set up and ran a successful thirty year Dental practice on the “circle” in Watchung, New Jersey. Art grew up caddying and became a life-long avid golfer. He played on the Seton Hall golf team, carded six holes-in-one’s (two in the presence of his son, Stephen), and shot his age numerous times. He initiated and led the annual Watchung Lions Club charity golf outing for many years. He was an active member of Saint Mary’s Stony Hill Catholic Church and the Watchung Lions club. He and Florence enjoyed international travel and wintered in Pompano Beach, Florida after his retirement in 1990. Art enjoyed hosting extended family gatherings during the holidays, vacations to the Jersey shore in Beach Haven, and hustling his friends playing shuffleboard, gin rummy, and ping pong in his basement. Art is survived by his wife, Florence; his three sons and their wives/partners Robert (Bob) and Lisa Gatesy, Stephen Gatesy and Maryann Davis, and John Gatesy and Cheryl Hayashi; his four grandchildren Kyle Gatesy, Matthew Gatesy, Anwyn Gatesy-Davis, and Marina Gatesy-Davis; his three great grandchildren Grace Gatesy, Amelia Gatesy, and Theodore(Theo) Gatesy; plus many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Elizabeth Geczy and his siblings Marie (Sanders) Geczy and Jules Gatesy.
