Obituary of Michael Joseph Malovic

IN THE CARE OF

Demaine Funeral Home

Michael Joseph Malovic passed into the waiting arms of Our Lord on August 31, 2020 at home surrounded by his family after valiantly battling congestive heart failure and Colon cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife (Josephine) Pinky of 53 years, beloved daughter Lorna, her husband Daryl and grandson whom he adored: Dominic, and his much loved son Frank, his wife Cheryl and the newest joy of a grandson: Alexander. Michael was an only child born in Norwich, England January 31, 1945 to Lorna & Frank Malovic. In 1946 he made his way with his mother on a bomb sweeping boat, the Huddleston, to join his father in Cleveland, OH. In high school, his rich bass baritone voice was heard and through a series of God graced events he participated in the Boris Goldovsky opera workshop in WVA where he met a lifelong friend who would later introduce him to the Army Chorus. While he was there he was drafted for the Vietnam War. God had other plans and thanks to divine intervention, and well placed courage and misplaced paperwork, he joined the Army Chorus in 1966 and in that same year married his wife Pinky, they were married just shy of 54 years. Although, he always wanted to be a Forest Ranger in Montana, during his 34.5 years with his Band of Brothers, Mike helped inaugurate every President from Johnson thru Clinton. He sang in over 30 languages, amassed numerous awards and letters of heartfelt thanks from Presidents, foreign leaders/dignitaries and quietly helped the country he loved through establishing a musical diplomacy program. This program is now copied by other musical organizations due to its success. After retiring as a decorated Sergeant Major from the Army Chorus in 2000, he continued to the very end to have coffee, support/attend the Chorus concerts and work alongside others who retired to grow the Army Chorus Alumni Association. This is his legacy, he felt strongly the Chorus was a family and while in a leadership position it was his duty to protect ‘his guys’ so they could shine with the gifts God had given them. He lived by the motto: Serve Others First Outside the Chorus, he cantored at too many Cathedrals, churches & synagogs to count, he volunteered for OAR (for ex-offenders reentering the workplace) an organization he truly believed in. He owned several successful business’ here and abroad, mentored hundreds but would always say his family was his greatest success and joy. To family and friends, when he shook your hand or gave you a hug, he looked you in the eyes, saw your spirit and was quick to tell you how much he loved you, believed in you or was proud of you, and he meant it. He was known for his passion of pingpong and table slide hockey, creme filled doughnuts, homemade berry pie, soft serve ice cream, the corner piece of cake, spending time with family up at the cottage in Canada fishing, the only man who mowed the lawn or went fishing in a pressed dress shirt, cheering on the CAPS or watching his favorite goalie, his grandson and traveling across the country for his hockey games. To some he is Uncle Mike or ‘brother’, to his wife he is the love of her life, to his daughter he is her hero, her North Star & the man by whom all men will be measured, to his son he is the best man he’s ever known, to his grandson he is ’Pop!’ and forever his ‘goalie guardian angel’. Dad always said the music made the movie, truly he made and sang the music to the movie of our lives and to him we are grateful. Indeed, God gave him a great gift and like he always said, one day He would ask for it back…and He did. In May of 2019 Dad made a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France with the Order of Malta, that was healing in a physical and spiritual way. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to support the organization with a donation so someone else can be sponsored in his honor: Order of Malta Federation P.O. Box 223132 Chantilly, VA 20153-3132 Please note: In memory of Michael Malovic
