Obituary of Robert Delos Hopkins
Robert Delos Hopkins, 63, of Madison Heights, VA passed away on January 2, 2021 after a brief COVID illness. Bob was born in 1957 in New Orleans, LA to Delos M. Hopkins and Ellen Mae Crawford Hopkins. He graduated from Amherst County High School and Central Virginia Community College. Bob was very proud of having worked with the Monelison Fire and Rescue Squad for over 35 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe, Va. Bob was employed by RR Donnelley as a Journeyman Printer for more than 33 years until his retirement in 2015. During that time, he also served the company in various Fire and EMS roles. Bob volunteered as a Communications Specialist for Amherst County Public Safety and helped implement the 800 Radio systems for the county. He was also an Instructor of CPR, AED, and First Aid for Monelison Fire, Monelison Rescue, and RRD Fire and EMS. He was a State Certified Training Instructor and conducted Mock Disaster Training in Amherst County for police, fire, and rescue. He trained Central Virginia volunteers and staff on driving of ambulances and fire trucks-Emergency Vehicle Operations Control (EVOC). While Captain of the Rescue Squad, Bob successfully worked with Amherst County residents, the Board of Supervisors, Public Safety, and the Sheriff’s Department to address public safety issues. He volunteered for fund raising activities to support the activities of the Lion’s Club, Monelison Fire Department, and the Amherst Sheriff’s department, as well as participated in numerous Board of Supervisors meetings as an Amherst County citizen to support county initiatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Col Delos M. Hopkins, USMC (Ret) and his mother, Ellen Crawford Hopkins. He is survived by his sisters, Dianne H. Parker (Bruce) of Columbia, SC; Mary Hopkins (fiancé Dave DesChamps) of Richmond, VA; and his beloved fur nieces Lucie, Lillie, and Sunny. Bob is also survived by his loving family of aunts, uncle, cousins, and his numerous wonderful friends throughout the years. The family would especially like to thank the UVA Transplant Center team, led by Natalie Belt RN, who treated Bob with such kindness and compassion during the past 6 years. He was extraordinarily blessed to be under the care of such outstanding medical professionals. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a future date.
