Jonathan D. Bishop
November 23, 1950 – July 2, 2019

Jonathan “Shug” David Bishop, Sr. passed away peacefully July 2, 2019 at the
age of 68. He was surrounded and supported by his family during his last days of
life. Jonathan was born to Winterfred Bishop in Washington D.C. on November
23, 1950 and raised by the late Jon and Elizabeth Bishop. He grew up in Greencastle,
PA and graduated from Greencastle-Antrim High School.
Following high school, Jonathan relocated to Montgomery County (MD) and was
employed by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Support Services.
In 1986, he transferred to the Maintenance Department where he worked as an
Electrical Technician. In addition, Jonathan was an advocate for fair labor practices
and served with SEIU Local 500 in a number of capacities including as a member
of the Executive Board for many years. After 35 years of service, Jonathan retired
from MCPS.
Jonathan was an active member of his community and belonged to several
organizations whose mission was to improve the quality of life for African
Americans and others including AFRAM and the Montgomery County NAACP.
In 1979, he became a Mason.
In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, fishing, and large family dinners. After
retirement, a typical day for Jonathan started with a freshly brewed pot of coffee
followed by daily errands and listening to his oldie but goodies music. He loved
vacations whether short or long, the walkie talkies would always come along.
Jonathan was a simple man who worked hard to take care of his family.
Jonathan is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Connie Bishop, several
brothers and sisters, his 5 children: Demaris (Ted), Allen, Paul (Nicole), Yalonda
(Aaron), and Jonathan Jr., 14 grandchildren,: Jeannie, Rachelle, Akiyya, Chandra,
Allen Jr., Frankie, Jasmine Erica, Ashley, Quintin, Taylor, Jonathan III, Alijah,
and Elizabeth, 5 great grandchildren: Brianna, Joshua, Trinity, Taji, Nazir, Elijah,
and Kori and a host of family and friends.
