Obituary of Lavell Finley
Lavell Ray Finley 91, passed away peacefully in her home with her family gathered around on April 12, 2020. She was born September 4, 1928 in Scottsville Kentucky to Mortie and Alice Gregory. Lavelle married Elzory King Mayes in January of 1949 who preceded her in death in 1971. She then married James (Jack) H. Finley in 1973 and enjoy 44 years of marriage together. Jack proceeded her in death in 2017. Lavell (or Love as her Grandkids called her) really enjoyed people. If she hadn’t seen you in a while, she would sure let you know all about it. She was a devote mom, wife and most of all Grandmother. Love enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and in the garden. No one can make Fried Apples like Love! She and Jack enjoyed Traveling together, camping and spending time in their winter home in Florida. But anyone who knows Love, knew she was happiest sitting around a card table playing cards and talking about old times. For many years Lavell worked at RCA in Indianapolis retiring from work life in 1987. She indulged her servant heart by helping out at Southeastern Church of Christ educating today’s youth in why wearing a white shirt and tie was a reflection of their best self. Lavell was active in Senior Servants, small group bible studies and organizing social gatherings everywhere she went. Hosting 75 people in her garage was a good idea in Lavelle’s mind. One of Lavell’s favorite bible verse was Ecclesiastes 3: 1 — “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Lavell is survived by her daughter and son in law Linda and John Shepherd, son and daughter in law Roger and Kerry Mayes, 6 grandchildren: Rodney Shepherd, Ryan Shepherd, Amanda Lumpkin, Rachel Weidner, Andy Tucker and Stephen Tucker, 7 great grandchildren: Keirsten, Makena, Brody, Brinley, Lilly, Werner and Alec, and 2 great great grandchildren: Parker and Micah. All of these she loved and touched deeply. A Memorial Gathering will be held at Southeastern Church of Christ on Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 10:00 am - 11:00am followed by a Memorial Service at the Church at 11:00 am. Pastor Greg York will be officiating the Service.
