Hugh Robert Gartrell Born June 7, 1927 – Died October 11, 2021 Hugh Robert Gartrell, 94, of Greenwood, died peacefully on October 11, 2021. He was born on June 7, 1927, in Indianapolis, IN. His parents were the late Hugh H. and Azalia (Walls) Gartrell. He was married to the late Betty Lou (Fries) Gartrell for 22 ½ years. They had 5 sons. Hugh is survived by his wife Sharon (Dunsmore) Gartrell for 48 ½ years, his sons: Hugh Lynn Gartrell (Sandy), Gary Robert Gartrell (Shan), Kevin Jay Gartrell (Kathy), 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, niece Katherine (Lochmueller) Bowling, nephew Stephen Lochmueller (Ellen Jo), sister-in-law Linda (Dunsmore) Augenstein and daughters-in-law Debbie Gartrell and Nancy Gartrell. He was preceded in death by his sons, Darryl Lee Gartrell (Debbie) and Chris Alan Gartrell (Nancy). He was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and was proud that his first wife and children were also graduates of Tech. He served in the US Army and was a Bugler. He was a member of the American Legion for 47 years. For over 42 years, Hugh worked for Eli Lilly & Company in the printing department. He played in the Lilly dance band and after his retirement played in the New Horizon Band for 20 years. He was an avid reader and went to the Greenwood Library often. He enjoyed a vegetable garden and spending time with his family. He loved being a Boy Scout Master. He had beautiful blue eyes and a warm smile and would entertain people with his stories and jokes. Many thanks to the caring staff at Franciscan Health Emergency Room and Hospital for their compassion and care. Visitation will be held at Little and Sons, 4901 E. Stop 11 Rd, Indianapolis, IN from 10:00 AM to Noon, with a service starting at Noon on Monday, October 18. Prayers and eulogy will be given by nephew, Fr. Eric Augenstein. A private committal service will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given in Hugh’s memory to the New Horizon Band of Indianapolis, 5282 E. 65th St., Indianapolis, IN 46220, or the Greenwood Public Library, 310 S. Meridian St., Greenwood, IN 46143. Arrangements are entrusted to Little and Sons, Indianapolis, IN. For the safety of the Gartrell family and guests masks must be worn in the funeral home.
