Carl James Semler passed away from this life January 19, 2019 at home in Bedford, Texas after a yearlong courageous struggle with esophageal cancer.
He was born March 13, 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margwen Murphy Semler, son Hank Semler and wife Meghan Semler of Houston, daughter Claire Johnson and husband Jeremy Johnson of Bedford, and grandchildren Alex and Evie Semler, Taylor, Wyatt, and Trevor Johnson, sisters, Joann, Nancy, and Ann Semler of Houston, and brothers, Bob and wife Marilyn of Houston, and Donald and wife Betty of San Antonio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was an All American football player at Tyler Jr. College and continued a lifelong avid interest in sports. Coach Semler taught many subjects and coached football and track for 40 years in Houston and in the HEB-ISD. He influenced thousands of young people and co-workers in positive ways and was highly regarded throughout the community. His sense of humor and his big hearty laugh made him welcome in any group.
Carl was a very active member of St. Vincent's Cathedral where he was on the Vestry and taught Sunday School for several years.
Donations may be made to St. Vincent's Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers.
Service will be held on January 26 at 1PM at St. Vincent's, 1300 Forest Ridge Dr., Bedford, TX, 76022.
