Obituary of Betty Lou (Hurley) McKinney
Betty Lou McKinney (nee Hurley), 88, of Sophia, died October 20, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 31, 1931, she was the daughter of Edgar Paul Hurley, and Georgia Mae ( nee Blevins) Hurley. Mrs. McKinney married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Matthew McKinney, and they recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Mrs. McKinney was an active member of the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church for over 60 years. She was an officer of the Ladies Auxiliary, and taught Sunday School and Youth groups for several generations. She was assistant buyer at Slab Fork Company Store during the 60's and 70's, where her sense of fashion was valued. She had a gift of hospitality, the consummate hostess. They opened their home to friends, family, visiting ministers, dignitaries, and strangers. Upon retirement, she and her husband enjoyed both domestic and foreign travel, and spent much of their time in Greenbrier County at their 2nd residence; always returning home to Sophia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Ralph Hurley, Elizabeth Holbrook (nee Hurley), Jack Hurley, Loraine Haga (nee Hurley), Mildred McClure (nee Hurley), and Rosalyn Eichorn (nee Hurley). Those survivors left to cherish her memories, her husband Thomas McKinney, daughter Paula McKinney Metcalfe, and Son in law, Robert Metcalfe.(Charleston, SC) Grandchildren Meredith Philliipe (Casey) Wyndam, MT. Miranda Maynard (Matt Rumley) (Los Angeles, CA) , McNair, Lucy and Marin Metcalfe. (Charleston, SC). Great grandchildren Trace and Hadley. Services will be held at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Viewing on Friday, October 25, 6:00-8:00. Funeral service, Saturday October 26 at 11:00. Rev. Al Whitt officiating. Burial service to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
