Obituary of Dr. James Howe Chin
With profound sorrow we mourn the sudden passing of Dr. James Howe Chin in the early morning of September 7th, 2019. James suffered a massive heart attack at home caused by undiagnosed coronary artery disease. He is survived by his loving mother, Mrs. Betty Chin, his doting sister Jennifer Chin, his soul mate and wife Dr. Haili Wang, his two wonderful children Sophia Chin and Ethan Chin. He also left behind his parents-in-law, Huizhen Ren and Zhenwu Wang, sister-in-law Amanda Wang (Li Xu) and nephew Nicholas Xu. James is also lovingly remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and an extended network of friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father Maxwell Chin, his grandparents, aunt and uncle. James was born and raised in Vancouver where he completed highschool and a Bachelor of Sciences Honors in Physiology at the University of British Columbia. He moved to Edmonton in 1999 to pursue a very rigorous combined MD/PhD program and has been calling Edmonton home since. He successfully defended his PhD thesis under the guidance of Dr. Jack Jhamandas in 2006, and completed his MD degree in 2007. He then pursued a residency in Anesthesia and started practicing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton until his untimely passing. He was very well respected and well loved by colleagues and patients alike. James loved reading, cooking, smoking meats, great food, a wide range of music, photography, weight lifting, travelling, watching sports and most of all, watching Sophia conquering the swimming pool. Despite all that he has accomplished in the academic realm or in the operating room, James’ truest pride and joy was his family. Together James, Haili, Sophia and Ethan have travelled to many countries with their extended families, spent hours at the swimming pool cheering for Sophia, enjoyed numerous bike trips through the river valley and walks around their neighborhood. James was the best father to Sophia and Ethan, a devoted and loving husband to Haili. A celebration of James’ life will be held on Saturday September 14th, 2019 at Hainstock Funeral Home and Crematorium at 10 AM. Reception to follow from 11 AM until 1 PM. The casket will remain in the main chapel for visiting during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that donations be made in memory of James to KidSport Canada (http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/donate/) or Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation (https://www.royalalex.org/ways-to-give/memory-gift-remembrance/).
