Nell Sugg Metz was born in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama, March 26, 1929, died May 14, 2019. Early years were in Goodwater, Alabama. However, she lived in Birmingham for 70 years. Mrs. Metz graduated from Montreat College High School, Montreat, N.C. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Physical Education in 1970 from the University of Montevallo and a Master’s Degree in Education, Guidance & Counseling from Samford University in 1974. She was Program and Executive Director for Girls and Women’s Programs, Ludlow Community Center, Ledlow, Massachusetts and Girls Club, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Samuel Sugg, Sr. and Ethel Jernigen Sugg, husband Wilbur Hinkle Metz, brother Phillip Samuel Sugg, Jr. and stepson, Lt. Col. Stephen Cole Metz.
Mrs. Metz was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was also a member The Club, DAR (Old Elyton Branch), Master Gardener's of Jefferson County and Brookhill Forest Garden Cub along with volunteering for numerous civic organizations.
