Obituary of James McSherry
James T. McSherry, formerly of Stony Point, NY passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019 after a long battle with glioblastoma. Jim passed away at home surrounded by friends and family. He was 72 years old. Jim is survived by his wife Susan (Mottolese) of 49 years, his sister Maryanne Liquori, his two sons James McSherry (Lisa) and Tim McSherry (Michelle), his daughter Heather Maragulia (Chris), 5 grandchildren- Brendon, Liam, Connor, Michael and Madison as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends. Jim was born February 21, 1947 in Manhattan to Thomas and Mary McSherry and grew up in New City, NY, graduating from Clarkstown High School in 1965. After serving 2 years in the US Army as a military policeman, Jim joined the NYPD in 1969. Later that year he met his wife Susan and after a brief courtship they were married in 1970. After retiring from the police department in 1983, Jim discovered his passion for youth soccer and started a second career as a coach, board member and then president of the North Rockland Soccer Association. Jim was instrumental in starting the NRSA travel program and as a coach, Jim led his beloved Wildcats girls soccer team to a state championship and on to become one of the premier youth soccer programs in the country. In addition to coaching, Jim’s loves included his family, being a grandpa, travel and playing golf. In 2006 Jim and Susan moved from Stony Point to Greenbrier Oceanaire Golf Community in Waretown NJ where they made many wonderful friends and Jim was able to play golf year-round. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 30th 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Higgins Funeral Home located at 321 South Main St, New City NY 10956. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 31st at 10 AM at St Francis Assisi Church in West Nyack, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Family Reach Foundation which is a financial lifeline for families fighting cancer.
