Obituary of Edmund J. Barr Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Edmund “Eddie” J. Barr Jr., age 83 of Ogdensburg, will be held on Friday (May 24, 2019) at 10:00am at the Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will follow at the Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. Barr passed away at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center on Monday (May 20, 2019) surrounded by his loving family. Surviving is his wife Sonya; a daughter Mary Griffin of Waddington; a son Michael Barr of Ogdensburg; four grandchildren Edmund “Joey” Barr, Alicia Barr, Kelli Barr and Garrett Griffin along with many nieces, nephews & cousins. He was predeceased by two sons Edmund Barr III in 2008 and Patrick Barr in 1994, a grandson Sean Michael in 1990 and three sisters Mary “Theresa” MacMartin, Joan Rogers & Carol Connors. Eddie was born on June 27, 1935 in Ogdensburg NY, a son of Edmund J. Barr Sr. & Elizabeth Morley. He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1953 where he was a standout football player. He later continued his education at BOCES and Canton ATC where he majored in Electrical Engineering. He was married to Sonya Sovie on August 14, 1965 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. He began his career as a mason working with his father for many years building fireplaces and constructing bases for local statues around town. He later joined the team of Niagara Mohawk workers where he retired as their planner after 38 years of employment. Eddie was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Notre Dame Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family at his camp on the St. Lawrence River, and was fond of making and gifting meat pies during holiday times.
