Alice T. Kraus, 91, a U.S. Navy captain’s wife who accompanied her husband to duty stations in the United States, Spain and Iceland, died July 28, 2020 at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean, Virginia. Alice Frances Tookey was born in New Haven, Connecticut. She attended the Williams School in New London, Connecticut, prior to her marriage in 1954. Her husband, Capt. Walter J. Kraus, U.S. Navy (deceased) served thirty years in the Navy. Alice managed household moving and childrens’ school arrangements so that the family could accompany Walter to posts in Virginia, California, Connecticut, Washington State, Maryland, Rota, Spain and Keflavik, Iceland. While living in Annapolis, Maryland Alice worked for 26 years as an Information Specialist/Tour Guide for the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation. When Alice retired in 2005 Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Admiral Rodney P. Rempt wrote, “...you have greatly contributed to the overall success of the Naval Academy’s mission. Not only is your work characteristic of a consummate manager, but your cooperative and friendly nature has earned for you the admiration of your fellow workers.” Alice resided at Vinson Hall in McLean, Virginia since 2005, where she was always knowledgeable on her friends’ and associates’ latest family news. Alice worked as a volunteer for her childrens’ schools and for several charities and political campaigns. Alice provided volunteer non-medical assistance to hospital patients as a Red Cross Gray Lady, She was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy Club and the Navy Officers’ Wives Club and enjoyed planning and managing home renovation projects. Alice will be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Survivors include three children, John F. Kraus of McLean, Virginia, Carol Hamal of Vienna, Virginia, and Jeanne M. Kraus of Houston, Texas; and three grandchildren. Her children remember her quick sense of humor, infectious laugh and phenomenal memory.
