Harold Cap R. Johnson Jr.

Harold R. “Cap” Johnson, Jr. age 100, of Bloomington, died Monday morning at I. U. Health; Hospice House. Born November 21, 1912 in Goshen, Indiana, he was the son of Harold R. Johnson, Sr. and Mable (Holtzinger) Johnson. He was an automotive engineer with Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana American Motors and later for Chrysler Corporation both in the United States and China. He received a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in South Bend, where he was a superintendent of a Sunday school which now has become a shelter for the homeless. He later attended the United Methodist Church in Syracuse, Indiana and also St. Mark’s in Bloomington. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and Pi Kappa Phi. Harold served during World War II and retired from the military reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and John Woodcock, of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Jaime (Tom) Vermillion, of Morgantown, Indiana, Rob Bola (fiancé- Rebecca Agbe-Davies), of Los Angeles, California and Andrew “Drew” (Chiharu) Bola, of Japan, six step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Sara and Rick Bola-Tsukakura, of Japan. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, Twanette (Blender) Johnson and Lucy (Shoemaker) Johnson and one brother, Jerry Johnson. A celebration of life service will be held this summer at Violett Cemetery in Goshen, Indiana. Friends may visit the family at Day Funeral Home in Bloomington on Thursday, January 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be given to I.U. Health Bloomington Hospice, American Heart Association or to the United Way of Monroe County.
